Yakshagana
hails from the coastal strip of Karnataka. It is the product of the
Vaishnava Bhakti (devotion) movement. It evolved to popularise the teachings
of religion to the common man, to whom the highly formalized and Vedic
religion was out of bounds. At least 400 years old, it is actually a
dance opera or a traditional theatre form combining dance, music, spoken
word, costume, makeup and stage technique with a distinct style and
